Advocacy to support military connected children in Southern California schools

  • Orange County Dept. of Education District Presentation

Debbie Nichols, founder of MCCG, and Ida Humphrey of the Department of Defense Air Force presented to the 26 School Districts, with the latest updates on government policies and opportunities available for Federal funding. The ODCE has offered MCCG to speak at all upcoming Quarterly meetings.

  • Updated 2018 MCCG School Resource Guide

Linda Oakford, volunteer extraordinaire, Linda has updated the 2018 MCCG School Resource Guide, which is available online for school counselors and officials to access.

  • USC LA Veterans Collaborative Family and Children’s Group meeting

A representative from Leland elementary School shared how they support 80 military connected children in their school, offering social events. Working with our collaborative partners, MCCG is developing a military friendly school plan blueprint for other schools.

  • Placentia Yorba School District Middle School Counselors and District representatives meeting. Debbie Nichols was invited to provide advisement and suggestions for the “Jump on Board for Better Grades” program and implementation. Counselors are offering additional a feedback.
  • The Child Guidance Center

MCCG has been invited to provide information and support for initiatives for engaging military families. MCCG will explore opportunities and funding.

Orange County Council Boy Scouts of America

A local Scout master has a Scout wanting to obtain Eagle Scout status supporting military families. Debbie will meet with the Scout and help the Scout develop a plan to present to OCCBSA.

MilTeenChat App launch rolls out with Month of the Military Child Events.

In anticipation of the MilTeenChat App launch, Debbie Nichols met with Kimberly Hagner of the Family Support for 79th Command Los Alamitos Joint Training Base for a demo, discuss support and inform additional military branches and Washington DC of the benefits of the App.

MCCG exhibited and presented at Orange County Veteran Collaborative’s 4th Annual Month of the Military Child Proclamation event for April the Month of the Military Child event at Los Alamitos.

Infinite Hero Foundation paid travel expenses for Bailey Caldwell to help launch the MilTeenChat App and shared an exhibit booth. Debbie presented a PowerPoint introducing the MilTeenChat App, which generated a lot of excitement. MCCG donated 85 Children Courage Coins to present to each child in attendance. Bailey met Senator Josh Newman and received a Congressional certificate from Congressman Luis Correa. Photos were taken of the event.

Debbie presented the APP to the Los Angeles Air Force Base Command and leadership, which generated excitement and next steps for support efforts. Legal is reviewing how MCCG can participate with promoting the APP on the Base.

San Diego Military Family Collaborative requested Debbie to speak on a panel addressing Month of the Military Child and sharing resources to support military children. The MilTeenChat APP was presented.  There were 150 attendees at the event which was also streamed live on Facebook. Copy of the event has been posted on MCCG FB, and other social media platforms.

Debbie spoke with the Navy Region Southwest Regional School Liaison Kelly Frisch who was very excited to learn about the App.
